“celebrate me home” ni kenny loggins…ang version niyang live sa “outside: from the redwoods” eh maganda. in fact most of the songs in that concert are really good. nandon din ang duet nila ni michael mcdonald na “this is it”” and my personal favorite – “now and then”. incidentally, both songs are included in the studio recorded lp…”keep the fire”, which in my book would be his best album. ok, balik tayo sa celebrate me home…dedicated sa lahat ng mga pinoy ofw (na tulad kong) uuwi sa pilipinas ngayong pasko.

WHERE YOUR HEART IS

1979
Don’t let me drift too far,
Keep me where you are
Where I will always be renewed.
And that which you’ve given me today
Is worth more than I could pay
And no matter what they say
I believe in you.
i believe in you, from the great Bob Dylan’s Slow Train Coming album. what made this lp great? wala lang – si bob dylan lang naman at si mark knopfler ang gumawa ng album. naalala ko pa nung unang lumabas ito… 14 years old pa lang ako. binili ko ang cassete na ito sa halagang 18 pesos sa isang record bar sa santiago, isabela. ang daddy ko kasi ay na-assign sa isang radio station sa norte at lumipat kami doon ng isang taon.
ang taon ay 1979, to be exact.
1979…mother theresa wins the nobel peace prize, margaret thatcher becomes new prime minister, john wayne dies, apocalypse now is shown on movie theaters, stephen king comes out with The Dead Zone and the world population reaches 4.3 billion people.
“1979”…di lang ito kanta ng SMASHING PUMPKINS (sample lyrics for epeks…”And we don’t know Just where our bones will rest, To dust I guess, Forgotten and absorbed, into the earth below”).
1979 was a great year of music.
1979 was the year dire straits released their 2nd album – Communiqué – “They wanna get a statement for Jesus sake, It’s like talking to the wall, He’s incommunicado no comment to make, He’s saying nothing at all…”
1979 was the year The Atlanta Rhythm Section released their “underdog” lp, ang paborito ng bayan ay ang kantang “do it or die”: “don’t let your troubles make you cry, don’t waste a moment wondering why, when everything goes wrong, you have to on and do it or die…”
1979 was the year Supertramp came out with their best lp called “Breakfast in America”… and of course the best song was…what else: “The Logical Song”
When I was young,
it seemed that life was so wonderful,
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees,
well they’d be singing so happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.But then they send me away
to teach me how to be sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world
where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical…
this was my song – my Logical Song… 1979 was the end of the innocence…
Remember when the days were long
And rolled beneath a deep blue sky
Didn’t have a care in the world
With mommy and daddy standin’ by
But “happily ever after” fails
And we’ve been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers dwell on small details
Since daddy had to fly
1979 was the year my daddy had to fly… ang galing ano? 14 years old pa lang ay full of music na, kaya lang nga eh walang daddy.
PASIR RIS
lumipat na rin kami ng bahay. from the west coast of singapore, we moved to the other end – pasir ris, at the east coast of the island. pasir ris is a lot better than west coast avenue. for one, it is more quiet. wala na yung ingay ng mga bus at motorsiklo na naririnig namin dati. it is much cleaner than our already clean surroundings over at Block 701.
our flat is bigger – we have a five room flat (too big for jet and i). but we only rented two. yung may-ari ng bahay is a co-worker who was permanently assigned in china. ayaw niyang ipa-rent sa iba, so, in a win-win situation – he rented his flat to us really cheap. he gets a monthly payment from us and in return, jet and i take care of his home. fully furnished with really good furniture at air-conditioned (di pwedeng hindi dahil pawis-singit ng init dito sa singapore), really big and clean. we have cable and internet connection. we got promoted – mataas na ang position namin: dati third floor lang kami, ngayon fifth floor na!
THE CRAZY GYPSY IN MY SOUL
going home on july 6 – two weeks from now. hmmm… looking forward to living in my house again, even if only for a few days. i’m happy – yeah. right here and now!
SHINING DOWN LIKE WATER
LADY CHATTERLY’S LOVER
i want to be a gardener. that’s my calling… well, maybe a part-time engineer on the side (for the extra cash). this is my dream job – but i cannot apply for it now because i am not qualified. to qualify for the position of gardener, one must have a sustainable retirement fund. this is only possible if i save up while i’m here in singapore. and it could take me 5 to 10 years.
let’s do the math… 5 to 10 years in singapore will guarantee me a good enough amount of cash for an early retirement. that will put my age to around 40-45 years old. i don’t think i’ll live to be 70 or 80. so, 45 plus 20 years is 65… a good enough age to permanently call it quits. it will give me 20 or so years to enjoy my retirement. not bad…
HAPPY VESAK DAY SA MGA KAPATID NATING KABUMBAYAN
Vesak Day (actual day of celebration – 26 May 2002) is celebrated by Buddhists annually to commemorate the birth & enlightenment of Buddha and his entry into Nirvana.
The day starts with chanting of the sutras by saffron-clad monks, while devotees visit the temples to pray and meditate and to make offerings. Acts of generosity known as Dana are observed by Buddhist organizations and temples. These include the freeing of caged birds and animals, visiting and giving alms to the poor and needy, while some Buddhist youths organize mass blood donation at hospitals. The celebration concludes with a candlelit procession through the streets.
25 may 2002, 11TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
MERRY CHRISTMAS?
this is my first christmas out of the country. my first christmas in singapore.
there’s not that much christmas cheer really. tumatanda na ako, di ko na na-enjoy ang pasko. parang parehong araw lang ito, katulad ng mga nag-daan ng mga araw – kisap-matang nawala. wow, ang gandang salita “kisap-mata”: “blink of an eye”… para bagang isang pa-profound effect to impress gentle reader. hehehe… amazing!
“it’s amazing whoop, with the blink of an eye, suddenly it’s alright”. sabi nga ni aerosmith. ang bilis talaga ng panahon. sana next year na, para pwede nang umuwi at mag-baskasyon.
merry christmas na lang, whatever it still means.
