Kitchen Confidential

ROAD TO PERDITION

Peter O’Sullivan: “Why are you always smiling?”
Conner Rooney: “Because I find life so fucking hysterical!”

BOOKS I AM CURRENTLY READING

1. “the last vampire” by whitley strieber. this is either too predictable or perhaps i have had too much of the genre. i’m halfway through and there’s a small voice that’s telling me to dump it.

2. “road to perdition”. graphic novel by max allan collins and richard rayner. made into a film by “american beauty” director sam mendes. this book should be read, at least, twice. once for the story. twice, for the artwork. highly recommended. as much as i respect the work of sam mendes a lot, i think the novel’s a lot better as a book than the movie is as a film.

3. “to father” tranlated by dava sobel. the letters of sister maria celeste to her father, the great astronomer and inventor, galileo. synchronicity again: while i was scanning the book this morning, my random song playlist started playing the indigo girls song called…”galileo”.

JAPANESE INVASION

ang title sa isa sa mga binabasa ko ngayong libro ay “ghost soldiers”. it’s about a little known rescue of a japanese POW camp in nueva ecija during the liberation of the philippines.

nabili namin ito ni jet nung MPH booksale. one week after buying it, nalaman ko na nagkaroon ng dedication ng memorial site doon sina ambeth ocampo at ang NHI. parang Synchronicity many times over – nalaman ko rin na isa na itong malaking hollywood movie na pinamagatang “The Great Raid”. tapos, through reading an interview of Rex Navarrete (alala nyo pa ba si MARITESS vs the SUPERFRIENDS) sa isang diyaryo, nalaman ko rin na kasama si cesar montano dito bilang isang guerilla leader who helped the americans rescue the camp.

Synchronicity? Plaka ni Sting at ng Police – mga kanta rito: Synchronicity; Walking in your footsteps; Oh my God; Mother; Miss Gradenko; Synchronicity II; Every breath you take; King of pain; Wrapped around your finger; Tea in the Sahara

MPH BOOKSALE

kung taga singapore ka at mahilig kang mag-basa, make sure to visit the Singapore Expo this week-end.

why? it’s the annual MPH bookstore sale!

Rolling down that hill into the night

Maybe the hardest thing I’ve ever done
Was to walk away from you
Leaving behind the life that we’d begun
I split myself in two
Proud and alone, cold as a stone
Rolling down that hill into the night
I could see the surprise and the hurt in your eyes
From behind each flashing city light
Love needs a heart and I need to find
If loves needs a heart like mine

Love won’t come near me, she don’t even hear me
She walks past my vacancy sign
Love needs a heart, trusting and blind
I wish that heart was mine

“love needs a heart” from the 80’s classic “running on empty” CD of jackson browne. dedicated to the recently loveless, mga SMAP (samahan ng mga malalamig ang pasko), at mga kasalukunyang nag-iisa, saan man kayo sa mundo ngayon. this is probably in my top five records to bring if i’m stranded on a desert island (medyo high-fidelityish. have you read the book or seen the movie?).

A PREY OF WORMS

“In the life of a man, his time is but a moment, his being an incessant flux, his sense a dim rushlight, his body a prey of worms, his soul an unquiet eddy, his fortune dark, his fame doubtful. In short, all that is body is as coursing waters, all that is of the soul as dreams and vapors”

marcus aurelius (roman emperor)
