habang tumatakbo ako kaninang umaga papunta sa opisina, ang “deacon blues” lang ang pinapakinggan ko sa iPod ng paulit ulit. mayroon kasi siyang cadence na bagay sa bilis ng pagtakbo ko, and it’s a great song to listen to any time of day.
They got a name for the winners in the world
I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues
pag nalulungkot ako, pinapakinggan ko ito. pag masaya ako, pinapakinggan ko pa rin ito. it’s a song that you can play whatever mood you’re in and there’s no other one like it. at one point, inexplain ni donald fagen at walter becker ang pagkagawa ng kanta sa VH1 pero hanggang ngayon di ko pa rin maintindihan ang mga lyrics. perhaps, it is just as well. there are some things that are better off, if it’s not totally understood.
a-ha! sa wakas, ako ang naunang mag-comment… hehe.
At tamang tama din naman kasi gustong gusto ko talaga pag ganito ang tema ng blog mo. This is when I touch base with the man I really know. It gives us the very rare chance of taking a peek into the soul of a man who’s… well… all about soul.
May you always relish the pleasures of contemplation mylab.
Labyu!
madali lang isulat pag ang topic ay tungkol sa music lalo na if it’s how music affects me. tama ka mylab, because it’s all about soul. billy joel would have understood completely. pero napapansin ko, pag music ang topic, kaunti lang ang naglalagay ng comment.
labu2.
Agree ako sa sinabi mo. Some songs are like a warm blanket that comforts us on a cold night. We enjoy the comfort it provides though we may not exactly know what it’s made of. So it is with certain songs. We may not have our arms around the meaning of the song pero there is something about it that soothes and comforts us.
hey..wala pong connection to sa blog nyo..meron ako ng book nyo..sobrang fav ko sya..funny,witty and bold ang book nyo..kahit nasa work ako paulit ulit kong binabasa..esp yung love story nyo ni jet
thank you sa pagbasa, sana di ka magsawa.
steely dan songs are very complex. both the music and the lyrics are layered like shrek’s onion. especially the lyrics – they’ve never really completely explained what they meant, which is just as well. ok lang sa akin na nasa fringe ako ng understanding.
para lang siyang magandang panaginip na di mo masyadong maalala pagkagising.
hi jay :
Steely Dan’s music is so special to me since it became my musical companion during those times that I was reviewing for my exams…. Can’t really understand the lyrics but what the heck as long as I can connect with the music that’s okey with me…. and deacon blues is my favorite song….
by the way, nakabalik na si binky sa LA…… I organized a one night show of Lampanao Alley and the Jerks at the RJ Bar last Sept 20….It was a blast…. Chickoy and Binky doing some duets…. The Jerks played many steely dan’s songs….. Howlin Dave hosted the show… regards to jet……
hi allan.
oh man, i wish we were there with you guys. iniinggit mo naman ako – matagal ko nang gustong mapanood na magkasama si chikoy at binky. the last time i saw them together was when binky, chikoy and the jerks jammed with papadom during the benefit concert for howlin’ dave.
The only lines I could really relate to are the opening lines of the chorus. “Learn to work the saxophone, I’ll play just what I feel.”
hi batjay,
i’ve asked myself the same question so many times — ano nga ba ibig sabihin nitong kantang ito that i grew up with and love so much?
for me the vibe was about coming to terms with not being able to fit, or just accepting being different and embracing it, like being alone but not lonely, or sumting like dut 😉
which is actually the beauty about steely dan songs. because you know they were being very specific when they wrote these lyrics, and yet you can join in and put another layer to the story because it also means something to you, then it becomes your very own. galing diba 🙂
here they talk about it as well …..

ngayon ko lang na discover ang blog mo batjay and i’m digging into you old posts. just wanted to say na life is not really complete without music, luma man o bago, rock man or love song, basta mas madali ang buhay dahil sa music..c”,)
thank you. i agree – music is a major part of my life and i don’t know where i’d be if not for the songs that has given meaning to my existing.
